Defining Racism Reflection (Group 1)

After reading the chapter "Defining Racism" I realized like the author was saying, the worst assumptions we make might not be about what we have heard or learned about but instead it may be the stuff we do not know about. To me this means people make assumptions without knowing anything and are just speaking. But when speaking they most likely will be speaking with passion like they know what they are saying. But in reality, they have no idea what they are even talking about the slightest bit.

I can relate to this because growing up I always heard people talk about stuff and they sounded very lost or even kind of stupid. But like always they were speaking with passion and were trying to give off the impression that they were right and knew everything. When people speak like this, I feel this is when more problems are created, or existing problems are made worse.

This easiest way this could be proved is by politics and the current situation we as a society are in. We are at a place where everyone has strong opinions on everything, which isn't a bad thing. But what makes that bad is that people speak about topics in which they are uneducated about. When someone uneducated speaks about something it could influence someone else into thinking the same thing and it could create false facts being spread. That is how you make a situation worse or create a bigger one.

To relate this to the reading you could look at the Indian drawings the students who were surveyed made. Many of those students probably haven't learned about Native Americans or if they have it would be very little. But they all have the impression of what they look like based off of a movie that isn't completely true. Now those students all believe they are correct and that is now how they picture Native Americans. In the future this may create problems and they could fall into the group who speaks on topics they are uneducated about.
